Pole Barns 101 – Part I - Image

Over the next couple months, MilMar Post Buildings wanted to engage our audience in some basics about what it is we do, and what exactly you are getting when we install a Post Building on your property. We’ll answer many common questions we receive and discuss our construction process. Although you might think barns are simple, you might learn a thing or two! Thanks for reading.

What is a Post Frame Structure?
Post frame buildings are engineered wood-frame building systems that have large wood or laminated posts or columns in lieu of steel or concrete. Weight is transferred to the foundation of the building, which is usually covered in concrete or masonry foundation. The beauty of a post-frame structure is they are able to be built quickly compared to other buildings, like houses, because the frame is very strong. The posts are also spaced out much further than a traditional stud-wall construction, so fewer materials are needed. Overall, building a post frame structure is a more efficient and cost effective way to construct a building.

What Is a Pole Barn?pole_barns
A type of post frame structure, a pole barn uses the same construction principles of a post-frame structure, but it’s materials are often more sustainable for agricultural uses, such as storing livestock or machinery in outdoor settings.

Pole Barns and post frame structures don’t necessarily need walls to be defined, as any building with poles that are anchored to the foundation fit the qualification.

What is the history of Post Frame structures?
In the 1930s, Americans used existing utility poles for many horse barns and agricultural buildings. Due to the lack of resources during the Great Depression and the inception of huge farms, the demand for large, affordable buildings came about. Because of the ease of construction, people figured out ways to make buildings even larger and cheaper, and pole barn nails were developed to tie things together.
